The Marlin 4 is the bike we sell most of, and it earns it. It is a proper hardtail mountain bike at a price that does not hurt, and it is equally happy on a fire trail, a gravel path or the ride to school.
What makes it work is the 1×8 drivetrain. One shifter, one derailleur, no front mech to drop a chain or need adjusting. Less to learn and less to go wrong, with a gear range wide enough for anything around here. It has hydraulic disc brakes rather than cable, which matters in the wet, and a 100mm SR Suntour fork with a lockout so you can firm it up on the road.
It also takes a rack and a kickstand, and the frame is routed internally for a dropper post if you get more serious later.
WHO IT SUITS
Someone buying their first real mountain bike, a rider who wants one bike for trails and commuting, or a parent after something their teenager will not outgrow in a season.
Worth knowing: the fork is a coil spring unit, not air. It works well and it is reliable, but it is not tunable to rider weight the way a dearer fork is. If you are a heavier rider, or you are planning on rough descending, come and talk to us about the Marlin 6 or 7 instead.
