The Marlin 5 is where the Marlin range starts to feel like a proper mountain bike rather than a bike that can handle a trail. You get a 100mm suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano's 9-speed CUES drivetrain with an 11-46 cassette, which is a wide enough range for anything in the Goulburn Valley.

It keeps the things that make a Marlin useful for real life: rack and kickstand mounts, internal routing for a dropper post if you upgrade later, and tyres at 2.4 inches that are happy on dirt and not punishing on the road.

Who it suits: a first serious mountain bike, or a rider who commutes during the week and rides trails on the weekend and wants one bike for both.
